"Why do we have federal elections every three years? "

Great question!

In Australia federal elections are held at least every three years, or earlier if requested by the Prime Minister and approved by the Governor-General.

The Prime Minister is chosen after the election, and is usually the leader of the party or coalition of parties that forms government. Sometimes, the same prime minister will lead the government for multiple terms. Occasionally, the Prime Minister will be replaced during their term of government.
