"what does the deputy clerk do"

There is a Deputy Clerk in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Like the Clerks in each of those chambers, the Deputy Clerk is a non-elected official who helps the Speaker in the House or the President in the Senate run chamber proceedings. The Clerks have a number of other roles. For example, the Clerks record the actions and decisions of the chamber and assist with ceremonial occasions, such as the openingĀ of Parliament and the swearing-in of new members of parliament.
